The Power of Placebo

The Power of Placebo

Have you ever heard the saying “Whether you think you can or you can’t, you’re right”. This is one of my favorite sayings that applies to almost every situation in life. I think it very accurately depicts the power of placebo and how our beliefs can limit us.

I like to apply this saying to nutrition: “Whether you think it’s going to make you fat or not, you’re right!” As someone who has struggled with body dysmorphia and disordered eating habits, I can attest to this. If you think carbs are going to make you fat, they probably will. If your mindset is ‘that you have a slow metabolism and need to really watch what you eat or else you will gain weight’, then it will come true.

Take it from me, I told myself for years that I didn’t have favorable genetics for muscle building, didn’t tolerate carbs well (so I avoided them like the plague), and that being lean was really hard for me. After my most recent blood work proved all of these subconscious beliefs wrong, my body composition has actually gotten better in a matter of weeks while changing nothing! Victoria actually half jokes that I immediately looked leaner the day after I got my blood results back.

This is a loaded topic and I will dive into this more in the future regarding visualization and tools to co-create your life, but the important thing to take away here is to lighten up. You already raised your blood sugar by thinking about eating the pizza… so you might as well eat it and enjoy it instead of having high blood sugar while eating chicken and broccoli!
